Dear World . . .

Here are my thoughts on this end-of-summer-Saturday-morning . . .

• I miss posting on my blog everyday. Yes, yes I do. I thought I would be relieved and thankful for the break, but really it just makes me feel like I am forgetting to do something. I'm not sure what the remedy to the situation is.
• I have been spending a lot of time thinking about the past. Maybe it's because of our whole family being together again for the past two weeks. Or maybe it's because I saw Mr. R.'s memorial video. Either way, many memories have resurfaced over the past couple of days.
• People ask me if I'm excited to go back to school, and I don't know how to reply. It's not that I'm not excited, but I wouldn't say I'm excited . . . Help?
• Everyone needs to listen to Come to Me by The Loft Sessions. We did it at The Experience last night. When I listen to it, I think of the words "violent love". Does that make sense? I know it's an oxymoron, but no other word describes the passion with which the song is sung.
• I feel like this year is a game-changer. And I'm not even sure what that means.
• The house is very quiet now. I enjoy the quiet, and I enjoy the full house. So which do I prefer? I have no sweet clue.
• Have you watched The Hunger Games yet? Because I did. And convinced Dad to watch as well. Still slightly obsessed with the movie. Once my DVD copy comes in the mail from Amazon I'll be watching it again. How many days until Catching Fire?
• So in the past few months of swimming lessons, I have {a} been kicked in the eye, {b} gotten serenaded by a 3 year old singing Big Green Tractor, {c} been bitten in the shoulder, {d} been asked where my bed is by a 3 year old {she thought I slept at the pool}, and {d} received four hand-drawn pictures. Verdict: A successful summer of teaching :)

No. 267 - If You See Earphones In My Ears . . .

. . . it's because I'm listening to The Hunger Games (Songs from District 12 and Beyond) on repeat.

This may or may not have been my first purchase with my first paycheck . . .

No. 232 - The Hunger Games

Wow, it finally happened. My inner geek was satisfied. Here is the story. 

So ever since Friday, I've been trying to go see The Hunger Games movie.
Friday night, we had just arrived in Calgary for our friends wedding (and even though Shawna told me later
she thought for sure I would be at the first theatre I could find), I refrained from going because it was opening night. 

Then on Saturday was the wedding and the difficult news about a family friend. 

On Sunday, we were travelling back, and I was too tired.

Monday night, I tried to go with Charlie, but our car broke down and the whole ride situation just wasn't working out.

Tuesday night, I had homework :(

Wednesday night, I had Political Science Class.

So that brings us to Thursday night (last night). I was sitting in girl's group, and we were just chatting about life when Larissa said she had seen The Hunger Games on Tuesday night. She was raving on about how good it was, and here were my thoughts, That's it. I can't wait any longer. I will find a way to be at the 9:40pm showing TONIGHT! Well, once the ball started rolling there was no way to stop me. I totally organized the whole ride situation, figured out the money, and roped in my brother and Sarah to accompany me. Needless to say, I thank them for putting up with my ecstatic attitude on the way to the theatre. 

And wow! What a movie! Here are my favourite parts (spoilers).

• My absolute favourite thing about the entire thing was how little they changed the book. I would say it matched the book about 90% of the time, and really, you can't ask for more than that.
• All the actors matched my idea of the characters so perfectly. I couldn't have asked for a better representation.
• When I was reading the book, I had a difficult time picturing what the Cornucopia looked liked, but the movie brought it to life.
• Two things I think they missed: (A) The whole dehydration/surviving/starvation sequence for the first part of the games. It was too easy for Katniss to find food and water. (B) The eyes of the mutant dogs at the end of the games. There was no reference that those were the eyes of the dead tributes. 
• I really appreciated that the gore and violence was as real and serious as it was in the books, but they didn't have to flaunt it in your face for you to get the point. In other words, the point was made tactfully.
• They really made the fire dresses/outfits wonderful! That was another thing I was worried they wouldn't do properly, but they did.
• All in all, I thoroughly enjoyed the movie, and now, I'm not too certain whether I liked the books or the movie better, but I think that's a good place to be!

No. 218 - DIY Hunger Games Project

So when I was on Pinterest the other day, 

I saw this Hunger Games Project idea and decided I really wanted to recreate it.

(Go on, call me a nerd).

Here is my attempt.

Supplies

-Hunger Games Book

-Pretty Paper

-Empty Frame

-Scissors

-Pencil
-Ruler

Photocopy a page from the book onto regular paper.

I then scanned it to my computer and made it bigger.

Photocopy onto pretty paper.

Make main quote template on computer.

Print onto pretty paper.

Put it in a frame and stare longingly at it until March 23rd (jokes).

No. 195 - Re-entering Reality

Okay, so I know I've been hyping up my upcoming read of The Hunger Games trilogy in the last few days. Well, today, I may or may not have read all three books. Now, I am having a bit of a reality shock as I attempt to come back to life in Fort McMurray, 2012. I am also suffering from the "Now, what?" syndrome, which kind of feels like saying goodbye to a best friend. I can't even begin to describe the alternate world these books take you to. You are hooked before you even know it. 

Read them!

Anyone who says they have only one life to live 

must not know how to read a book.
